Installing attic stairs

If you want to add living space to your attic and donít have a full set of stairs going up there, you should hire a professional to make and install a staircase for you. But if you just want a better way into an attic that currently has only a small access hole, then consider installing a fold-down stairway. This job is within reach for most homeowners and can make getting up and down much easier. The starting point is buying the staircase unit at a lumberyard or home center.

Step 1. Begin by marking the rough opening dimensions on the surface of the ceiling. Then cut away the drywall to gain access to the attic, Stand on a ladder, and cut any ceiling joists that are in the way. Install double headers at each end of the cut joist (or joists) to sup port the weight that was carried by the cut joist.

Step 2. Double up the joist that runs . alongside the stairway opening, too. Cut stock to length; then screw it in place using 2Ĺ-in.-long drywall screws.

Step 3. Frame the other side of the opening with a joist installed in joist hangers. Layout the headers and nail the hangers in place first. Then cut the filler joist to length, and nail it to the hangers.
