Installing attic stairs (Page 2)


Step 4. To support the staircase while ď itís being installed, screw scrap boards in place that extend into both sides of the opening. This creates a stable ledge that will prevent the staircase from falling.

 

Step 5. Lift the staircase into the opening, and rest it on the support ledges. Attach it to the ceiling framing with lag screws. Shim between the staircase frame and the opening with cedar shingles.

 

Step 6. 4 Fold down stairs must be cut to length after the unit is installed. To do this, first unfold the stairs and take a measurement (using a ruler as shown) from the top and bottom of the middle stringer to the floor.

 

Step 7. Transfer the two measurements to the bottom section of the stringer; mark a line between them; and make a cut Do the same thing to the other stair stringer. Sand the cuts smooth and test the stairway.
