Building A Soundproof Wall (Page 2)

Step 4. lf you can sacrifice the room, attach 3/4-in.-thick polystyrene foam boards to the studs before installing -in.-thick drywall panels. The foam boards will improve the soundproofing of the wall.

Step 5. Finish up the soundproofing by installing a second layer of drywall over the first, staggering the joints between layers. The best way to do this is to install the first layer vertically and the second layer horizontally. Once all the panels are in place, finish the seams and joints using drywall tape and joint compound.

Reduce the sound of plumbing noises by wrapping supply, vent, and especially drainpipes in walls with insulation.

A spiral wrap of insulation batts around in-wall ducts reduces the noise of air movement and saves energy.

Sound can seep around the edges of a wall, as well as through it. Applying caulk along the edges will help.
