Ceilings - Installing A Built-Up Cornice (Page 2)


Step 6. Cut outside miters on the cornice boards; test them for a tight fit; then nail them in place. A pneumatic gun drives nails better than a hammer and is worth renting if you have a lot of trim to install.

 

Step 7. Install a fascia board over the front edge of the backer board and the soffit board thatís under the backer. Keep the fascia 1/4 in. below the bottom of the soffit board.

 

Step 8. Nail a bed molding over the fascia boards. Keep the bed tight against the ceiling so there are no visible gaps.

 

Step 9. The finished cornice looks like one piece of molding, albeit an elaborate one. Instead, itís com posed of seven separate boards.
