Finishing drywall seams (Page 1)

Finishing drywall is one of those jobs that get easier with practice. The more comfortable you become with the tools and materials, the faster the finishing will go and the better results you’ll get. For the beginner, the biggest problem is keeping the knives clean and the compound free of any debris. The goal is to get the smoothest possible surface after the com pound is applied. So any impurities that are dragged across the surface will create deep grooves that need to be sanded out once the compound is thy.

Step 1. Begin finishing by running a taping knife over all the fasteners. If you hear a click as the knife passes over the wall, the nail or screw is too high. The goal is to be able to cover the head of the fastener with joint compound that can be sanded flush with the surrounding surface.

Step 2. Fill the compound pan with premixed joint compound. If you see any dried pieces of compound around the rim of the pail, remove them and throw them away. Do not try to mix these back into the pail. Use a 4-in.-wide knife to apply compound over the fastener heads. Wipe off the excess using the same knife.

Step 3. Finish all the tapered joints first; then do the butt joints. Use a 4 knife to spread a base coat on the tapered joints. The goal is to fill the depression with compound and to create a bed for the paper joint tape. Scrape away any excess compound to yield a smooth surface.
