Step 4. Roll out the joint tape, and press it into a corner. Then place it in the compound using your lead hand, and follow with the 4-in, knife in the other hand. Once youíre comfortable with the knife and tape, you should be able to embed the tape as fast as you can walk along the wall.

Step 5. Smooth the tape and compound with a 6-in, knife, using firm pressure to smooth out any wrinkles. Donít press too hard and risk forcing all the compound out from under the paper. If this happens, the tape will not stick to the wall when the compound dries.

Step 6. When the tape is smooth, run the 6-in, knife along both sides of the joint to remove excess com pound. The smoother you make the surface now, the less sanding youíll have to do later. Remember, itís much easier to get the compound on the wall smoothly than it is to sand it smooth after itís dry.

Step 7. While the tapered joints are drying, sand the dried A compound over the fastener heads. Use 120-grit sandpaper wrapped around a wood block. Be sure to wear eye and breathing protection when doing this job, and vacuum off the dust when youíre done.
