Fixing a leaking skylight (Page 2)


Step 4. Spread a thick coat of roofing cement under the ‘ flashing. Use a trowel to make sure the cement is smooth; then press the flashing down into the cement until is sits flat on the roof.

 

Step 6. Lift up the flashing at the bottom of the unit, and spread roofing cement underneath its entire width. Then slide a roof shingle that’s cut to size and shape under the flashing and on top of the cement.

 

Step 5. Cover the top of the nail hole and the surrounding flashing with roofing cement, smoothing it in place with a trowel. Be sure to cover the edge of the flashing where it meets the roof.

 

Step 7. Once the bottom shingle is I in place, fold down the side shingles, and press them into roof cement Do not use any nails to attach shingles within 6 in. of the flashing.

 

REFLASHING A VENT PIPE

 

To reseal an old vent pipe, start by scraping away layers of surface tar. Then peel back surrounding shingles and tar paper to inspect the roof for damage, and make repairs as needed.

 

Install modern flashing with a rubber ring to seal the pipe and a flange to weave into the shingles. The high side goes under the shingles; the low side rides on top.
