Flowers and Vases > Preserving

Alberto V05 Hair Spray. To preserve floral arrangements, spray Alberto V05 Hair Spray on babyís breath, bromegrass, and cattails. Hair spray works like a fixative, holding delicate buds and flowers in place.

20 Mule Team Borax, Albers Corn Meal, and Tupperware. To preserve flowers, mix one part 20 Mule Team Borax and two parts Albers Corn Meal. Fill the bottom one inch of an empty, airtight Tupperware canister with the powdered mixture. Place the flowers on top of the layer of mixture and gently cover the flowers with more mixture, being careful not to crush the flowers or distort the petals. (For flowers with a lot of overlapping petals, such as roses and carnations, sprinkle the mixture directly into the blossom before placing it into the canister.) Seal the canister and store at room temperature in a dry place for seven to ten days. When the flowers are dried, pour off the mixture and dust the flowers with a soft artistís brush. Borax absorbs the moisture from blossoms and leaves, preventing the wilting that would normally result.
