Hanging wallpaper

There are several common sense keys to successful wallpaper hanging. Work with a sharp utility knife; change the blade after just a couple of cuts. Keep your worktable clean and free of paste or adhesive. Make sure the outside of each strip of paper is cleaned with a damp sponge before you hang another piece in place. And handle the paper gently.

Vinyl wallcovering make a good choice for kitchen walls. There are numerous colors and patterns from which to choose, and the paper itself is easy to keep clean. Consider a complementary border treatment.

Step 1. To establish a starting line, take a sample piece of the new paper and hold it against the wall with one end folded 1/2 in. past the inside corner. Mark where the straight end of the paper falls on the wall.

Step 2. Use a 4-ft. level to mark a starting line on the wall. Draw the line from the floor to the ceiling, making sure that the line is exactly plumb along its entire length.

Step 3. Cut a piece of prepasted paper to length; then roll it up loosely; and lower it into a tub of lukewarm water. Slowly pull the paper out of the tub, and spread it across a clean worktable. If you pull the paper out too quickly, the water may not have time to completely activate all the paste.

Step 4. Fold the wet paper onto itself from both directions. This is called booking the paper and makes it easier to carry and install than trying to work with a long, unwieldy strip of wet paper.

Step 5. After the paper sets up according to the manufacturer's directions, carry it to the wall; peel away the top section; and press it against the wall. Make sure that one edge of the piece turns the corner slightly. Handle the paper carefully to avoid tearing it.

Step 6. Align the strip with the plumb line that is drawn on the wall. Start the strip slightly away from the line, and gently push it over to the line. Leave excess paper at the top and bottom of the wall so that you can make the finished cuts.
