How to Fill in Holes and Cracks in Basement

Tools

Caulk gun, putty knife or trowel, masonry chisel, wire brush, hand vacuum.

Materials

Latex masonry caulk, fiberglass insulation, latex-bonding agent, concrete patcher.

Method

1. Repair a hole; insert a piece of foam backing rod into holes larger than 1 deep to provide a base for the caulk or hydraulic cement.

2. Apply latex bonding liquid to the edges of the hole. Stir water and hydraulic patching cement together in a container and add the latex bonding liquid. Fill the hole with the mixture and smooth it with a flexible knife.

3. Repair a crack; for cracks smaller than wide, use grey-tinted concrete polyurethane caulk to repair the crack. For larger cracks apply a pourable crack filler or patching cement to fill the crack. Using a masonry chisel, wire brush and hand vacuum, remove any loose masonry from the crack.

4. Apply polyurethane caulk to the crack with a caulk gun. Using a putty knife or trowel, smooth the caulk until it is level and flush with surrounding area. Allow the caulk to dry.
