How to Install Ceiling Fan/Light Control

Tools

Stepladder, linemanís or long nose pliers, neon electrical circuit tester, standard screwdriver.

Materials

Two wire fan/light control, rocker style switch cover plate.

Method

1. Before turning off the power, turn the fan/light switch to the on position and use any pull-chains to turn the fan onto the highest speed and the light on.

2. Shut off the power at the circuit panel. Remove the fuse or switch the circuit breaker to the off position at the circuit location for the fan/light. Use a neon tester to make sure that the power is off to all wires in the outlets. Touch the testerís probe to the hot wires (red or black) and the neutral (white) wires to check if the power is off.

3. When installing a new fan, complete the installation up to when it is time to wire the fan and switch. When changing an existing wired fan/light, reverse the installation to extract the fan canopy and disconnect the existing fan. Disconnect the old single-pole switch and remove the switch cover plate. Use a small screwdriver to release the clamping pressure that holds wires that are plugged into holes in the back of the switch instead of being wrapped under terminal screws.

4. Install the receiver into the fan canopy according to the manufacturerís instructions. These instructions should include a simple wiring diagram depicting the wiring installation of a new unit. Attach one pair of receiver wires (black & white) to the two wires protruding from the switch. Connect the other three wires (red, white & black) to the three corresponding wires coming from the fan Follow the manufacturerís instructions to finish installing the canopy & fan.

5. Follow the wiring instructions to attach the two wires that were removed from the old switch to the new transmitter/control. Secure the control to the outlet box. Attach a rocker-style cover plate. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Use linemanís pliers to cut off the old pull chains on the existing units.

Note: If you donít feel comfortable doing this project, please hire an electrician.

When in doubt, donít!
