How to Paint

Using Your Paintbrush

  • Transfer some paint from the can into a small paint bucket with a handle. It will be easier to carry with you as you move around the room.

  • Double-check your paintbrush. If you are using water-based (latex) paint, you should have a synthetic-bristle brush.

  • Don’t overload your paintbrush! Dip the bristles only about 2” (5 cm) into the paint. Tap, don’t drag, the bristles on the side of the can.

  1. Begin painting with horizontal strokes in a back-and-forth manner using first one side of the brush then the other (see top photo). Press the brush against the surface just hard enough to flex the bristles slightly. Always paint from dry areas back into wet areas to avoid lap marks.

  2. Smooth the paint evenly across the surface using vertical strokes. Feather, or blend, the edges of your painted area by brushing lightly with just the tip of your brush.

  3. Along edges where a wall meets the ceiling or woodwork, use a technique called “cutting in.” Hold the brush at a slight angle. Stroking slowly, move the brush slightly away from your edge as you go (see lower photo). This will allow paint to bead up along the straight line of the edge.
