How to prepare wood for paint (Page 2)

Step 5. Tape off the woodwork.

Step 6. Apply a coat of primer, using a paintbrush (a 2˝” sash brush works well). Let the primer dry according to the manufacturer’s directions.

SAFETY TIP

If your home was built before 1978 and you will be sanding painted wood, test the painted wood for lead before taking any further action. You can purchase a lead-testing kit for this job. If the test indicates the presence of lead, collect a sample and consult a lead-abatement specialist.

Step 7. Lightly sand the primed woodwork and wipe the surface with a tack cloth.
