Plastic (usually polystyrene) molding is a material choice that appeals
to many do-it-yourselfers. It comes in a variety of shapes that mimic
traditional plaster molding. These “boards” are very light, so they are
easy to transport and install. And they are typically available with
matching corner and connecting blocks that eliminate the need for
mitered and coped joints. If you want a more traditional look, keep in
mind that any joint gaps can be easily filled with caulk and covered
with paint.
Step 1.
Hold a section of molding in place, and mark guidelines along the top
and bottom edges using a pencil. Make sure the bevels at the back of the
molding sit flat against both the wall and the ceiling.
Step 2. Following the
manufacturer’s directions, install a bead of construction adhesive just
inside the guidelines on the ceiling and the walls.
Step 3. Press the molding
into the beads of adhesive, and attach it with finishing nails driven
through the front of the molding into the wall studs behind.
Step 4. Where the molding
sections meet, fill any gaps using latex caulk. Smooth the bead with a
putty knife, and remove any excess caulk. Finish up by painting the trim
boards (inset).
