Installing flat-panel wainscoting (Page 2)

Step 3. Once the layout is done, remove the clamps and separate the rails. Then, using a plate joiner, cut the plate slots in the rail edges using the layout lines as a guide. Work on a firm surface, and press the board down flat so the joiner cuts the groove in the right spot You can also join the frame parts with dowels and a drill.

Step 4. Place the bottom rail against the plywood panel, and support it with short scrap blocks. Check the rail for level. If it needs sonic adjustment, slide shims under one of the blocks until it is level.

Step 5. Nail the bottom rail in place. We used a pneumatic nailer because it makes the work easier and faster. But hand nailing produces good results too. Drive two nails every 16 in., and set the heads below the surface with a nail set.

Step 6. Spread carpenters glue in the plate slot in the rail and the matching stile. Then cover the plate with glue, and slide it into the rail slot. Place the first stile above the plate, and push it down until it is tight to the bottom rail. Check the stile for plumb (insert), and nail it in place.
