Step 7. After all the stiles are nailed in place, apply glue to the plate slots in these stiles and in the bottom edge of the top rail. Then spread glue on the plates, and insert them in the stiles. Place the top rail onto the plates, and push it down until it is tight to the top of the stiles. Wipe away any excess glue.

Step 8. Clamp the top rail to the bottom rail until the glue dries. Nail the rail to the plywood panel every 16 in. If you are hand nailing, set the nail heads with a nail set.

SMART TIP

IF YOU PLAN TO DO EXTENSIVE TRIM WORK, T1-IEAOVANTAGES OF A PNEUMATIC NAIL GUN ARE OBVIOUS: INCREASED SPEED AND NO HAMMER MARKS. BUT EVEN FOR SMALL JOBS, THERE ARE REASONS TO CONSIDER A NAIL GUN. FIRST, THE NAILS USED IN A FINISHING NAIL GUN ARE THINNER THAN THOSE THAT YOU DRIVE BY HAND, SO THERE IS LESS CHANCE OF SPLITTING THE WOOD WHEN NAILING NEAR AN EDGE. YOU CAN ALSO ADJUST THE PRESSURE THAT DRIVES THE GUN, SO YOU CAN SET THE NAIL JUST BELOW THE SURFACE OF DIFFERENT DENSITY MATERIALS. THIS ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR DRILLING PILOT HOLES THAT ARE OFTEN NECESSARY WHEN HAND NAILING HARD WOOD BOARDS. TO DRIVE ONE OF THESE GUNS, YOU WILL NEED A COMPRESSOR. LOOK FOR AN ELECTRIC MODEL IN THE 1.52.5 HORSEPOWER RANGE.

Step 9. When you reach an outside corner, one of the stiles must be ripped so its 3/4 in. narrower than the mating stile. This way both walls will appear to have a full-width stile at the end. Install the rails and stiles on the second wall the same way you did on the first. And glue and nail together the corner stiles.
