Step 10. Furr out the bottom of each wall by nailing scrap strips to the plywood panel. Rip these strips from material that is the same thickness as the rail board.

Step 11. Use the same lumber for the baseboards as you did for the rails and stiles. Cut each board to length; then nail it to the rail and the furring at the bottom of the wall. After all the baseboards are nailed in place, install the cap molding on top of the base-boards.

Step 12. The wainscoting cap is assembled in two pieces. First install a cove molding along the top edge of the top rail. Keep the top of the molding flush with the top of the rail. Then nail a cap molding over the rail and the cove.

Step 13. The wainscoting can be complete at this point if you like the look of the square frames around the flat panels. You can also miter molding strips to fit inside the frame parts, and nail them in place. When you’re done, lightly sand the whole installation with 120-grit sandpaper; then prime and paint.
