Installing framing for a skylight (Page 2)

Step 6. Cut and nail headers to both ends of the ceiling opening to carry the weight of the missing joists. Once the headers are installed, cut out the drywall and screw the drywall to the perimeter of the opening using drywall screws.

Step 7. Build a frame around the opening using 2x4s. Install the angled members first and then the short studs. Once the framing is done, install drywall on the inside surface and insulation behind the drywall.

MAINTAINING ATTIC AIR FLOW

In attics, itís important not to block the ventilation necessary to moderate attic temperature and prevent condensation problems. Either install plywood stops near the overhang to keep vents clear or install venting baffles that channel air past the layers of insulation.

To add air baffles, first scrape away excess insulation in the roof overhang.

Staple a lightweight foam baffle to roof sheathing in bays between rafters.
