Installing slate floor (Page 2)

Step 4. Let the mastic dry according to the manufacturerís specifications. Then mix your grout, and spread it into the spaces between the tiles with a trowel, pushing it into the bottom of each space. Smooth the joints with a flat pointing trowel.

Step 5. Clean up the grout as you go, using a sponge and clean water. Itís much easier to remove the grout now while itís still damp than it is later, after itís dried on the surface of the tile. Clean the sponge frequently to avoid spreading the grout around instead of picking it up.

Step 6. Once the grout is dry, clean and polish the slate by sprinkling the surface with sawdust and rubbing it with a burlap rag. Work from side-to-side and in a random circular pattern. Vacuum up the sawdust, and rinse the floor with a damp sponge.

Step 7. Sealing the floor will keep the grout clean and the slate shiny. But you should wait about a month after the tile installation is complete. This gives the grout a chance to cure properly.
