Installing track lights

ABOVE Track fixtures can be used for general lighting or to provide task lighting to specific areas.

If you’d like to try some track lighting to change the look of your room or to direct more task lighting where you reed it, then you’re in luck. Installing one of these systems is not difficult, especially if you already have a switch-operated ceiling fixture where you want the track to go. All you have to do is shut off the power to the fixture, remove it, and start installing the tracks. Once they are attached to the ceiling, install the light heads and turn on the power.

Step 1. Turn off the power at the service panel, and remove the old ceiling fixture. Mark the ceiling for the location of the tracks according to the manufacturer’s instructions in the track lighting kit.

Step 2. Start installing the tracks by threading the wires from the power connector through its mounting plate holes. Then conned like-color wires from the connector to those in the ceiling box. Make the wire splices using the right size wire connectors.

Step 3. Screw the power connector mounting plate to the electrical box. Make sure the plate is tight and doesn’t pinch any of the cable or fixture wires. Then lift up a section of track; slide it between the connector wires; and attach it temporarily to the mounting plate.

Step 4. Temporarily install all the tracks and the connectors. When you are satisfied with the layout, mark all the track-mounting holes on the ceiling; then take down the tracks. Where the track passes under a ceiling joist, you can use drywall screws to attach it. In the spaces between joists, use toggle bolts.

Step 5. Permanently install the tracks and any T- or L-connectors, and make sure they are all tight against the ceiling. Slide the light fixtures onto the track, and lock them in place. Turn on the lights, and adjust the direction of the lamps if necessary. Then touch up the ceiling paint to cover any installation marks.
