Installing wall tile (Page 2)

Installing tile is not difficult, but it can be time-consuming. Because of this, be sure to read the container label on your adhesive to find out what its open time” is. This refers to how long the material can be exposed to the air be fore it starts to dry out and won’t hold the tile. The best approach is to start by applying the adhesive to a small area—for example a 2 x 2-ft. square noting how long it takes you to get the tile in place. If you are well within the open time limitations, enlarge your working area for the next stage.

Step 5. If your tiles have lugs on the sides that act as self-spacers, the proper grout joints are automatically formed. Otherwise, use small plastic spacers to keep the tiles aligned.

Step 6. When you finish the rest of the wall, and the adhesive has started to dry, remove the support nails and install the bottom tiles. Tape them to the tiles above until the adhesive dries.

Step 7. Once the wall is dry, mix up some tile grout and spread it on the wall with a rubber-faced float. Use firm, diagonal strokes to force the grout into the joints. Try to minimize the grout you leave on the face of the tile because it will be hard to remove later.

Step 8. No matter how careful you are, the grouting process always leaves behind a haze on the tile. To remove this, use a large sponge that’s frequently dipped in clean water. It can take several passes to clean the tile using water. Once the surface dries, buff it using a clean cloth to remove any leftover haze.
