Step 3. Mark the notches in both ends of the stool with a combination square and a pencil. Set the square to the depth of the notch; then slide it along the edge of the stool holding a pencil against the edge of the blade.

Step 4. To establish the finished width of the stool, place a casing scrap on the stool with its back on the notch line. Mark the stool on the front edge of the casing board, and make a second mark in. from the first mark. Rip the stool along this second mark using a table saw or a circular saw with a rip guide.

Step 5. Once the stool is ripped to width, cut out the wall notch at both ends using a saber saw or a handsaw. Cut slowly to get a smooth, straight cut.

Step 6. Some stools require more modifications before they can be installed. lf this is the case with your window, hold the stool in place, and mark any required notches, like the one around the window stop above.

Step 7. Some windows also require a rabbet along the edge of the stool where it meets the sill. This rabbet can be cut with a table saw or a router.
