Installing wood strip flooring (Page 2)

These days, many different wood species are used for flooring, generally as veneers glued over plywood panels. But traditionally, solid maple and oak were used for floors because the wood was so hard and the trees were so plentiful. Solid wood floors may be difficult and time-consuming to install, but they look wonderful and are very durable, often outliving the houses where they were installed.

Step 5. Drive each board into the last row until the joint is tight. Then use a rented floor nailer to edge-nail the board. Place the tool over the tongue, and strike the plunger with a mallet. Nail the flooring at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer.

Step 6. Some boards are warped and wonít fit easily into the previous row. If these boards are very distorted, set them aside and cut shorter boards out of them later. But for modest problems, you can drive the board into place by tapping a wedge between the board and a block thatís screwed to the floor.

Step 7. To fit boards that finish a row, hold the board up to the gap, and put a spacer at the end next to the wall. Mark the board, and cut it to length using a miter saw or a circular saw.

Step 8. To close up the joint between the last board and the wall, use a pry bar against a wood block to protect the wall. Hold the joint tight, using the pry bar if necessary, and drive nails along the back edge of the board. Cover the gap with baseboard and shoe moldings.
