Laying ceramic floor tile

Ceramic floor tiles come in a wide variety of different shapes and colors. One of the primary differences is whether the tile is glazed or unglazed. The unglazed type shown here is a common choice for both bathrooms and kitchens. The reason is simple: most unglazed tiles provide better traction in wet conditions. To protect them from staining, a sealer is applied every year or two.

Step 1. Begin by laying out the floor and snapping chalk lines to guide your work. Then spread only as much adhesive as you can cover with tile before it dries. The container will specify the open time of the adhesive inside. Use a notched trowel held at a 45-deg. angle.

Step 2. Press individual tiles into the adhesive, giving each a slight twist to make sure the back of the tile is completely covered with adhesive. Keep tiles and grout lines aligned as you work.

Ste 3. Make sure all the tiles are embedded completely in the adhesive by tapping them with a padded board and a hammer. Use the block every couple of courses, and make sure the block spans several tiles every time you strike it.
