Making a false header

There are several ways to separate rooms. The most privacy is achieved with a door. Another option is a dropped header between rooms that divides the space without closing off the rooms visually. The last option is to simply install full partitions to separate rooms and leave an opening, from floor to ceiling, to allow passage between rooms. This last option is popular in modern design, but it isnít always attractive. Installing a dropped header is a good way to dress up this treatment.

Step 1. To build a false header, first measure the distance between partitions and cut two pieces of 2x4 stock to match this measurement, minus about 1/16 in. to make fitting the boards easier (inset). Also cut the short end studs that fit between these plates, and join them to the plates using corner brackets.

Step 2. Lay out the stud positions every 16 in. on center. Then cut the studs to size, and nail them in place using 10d nails driven through the plates.

Step 3. Screw a support cleat to the side of the opening; then lift up the frame, and rest it on this cleat. Screw the fame to the ceiling joists and the jack studs on both sides of the wall opening.

Step 4. Cut drywall pieces to cover the framework on the bottom and both sides. Screws these panels in place; then finish them using joint compound and drywall tape. Sand the joints smooth, prime, and paint.
