Painting > Splatters and Smears

Alberto V05 Conditioning Hairdressing. Coat windows, hinges, doorknobs, and lock latches with Alberto VOS Conditioning Hairdressing to prevent paint from adhering to the surfaces. When the paint dries, wipe off the hairdressing with a cloth.

ChapStick. Before painting a room, rub ChapStick on hinges, doorknobs, and around the edges of the glass next to the trim. Paint smears will wipe off easily with a cloth.

Dixie Paper Plates. Use a Dixie Paper Plate as a drip pan for a can of paint. Attach the plate to the bottom of the paint can with a little putty or some adhesive tape.

Dixie Paper Plates. To prevent paint from dripping when painting the ceiling, carefully cut an X through the center of a Dixie Paper Plate. Insert the handle of the paintbrush through the X, allowing the paper plate to catch any paint drips.

Glad Trash Bags. To protect chandeliers and hanging lamps when painting a ceiling, pull a Glad Trash Bag up over the lighting fixture and tie it up as high on the chain as possible.

Huggies Baby Wipes. To clean up paint splatters, wipe the spots with a Huggies Baby Wipe.

Ivory Soap. Before painting a room, run a bar of Ivory Soap on hinges, on doorknobs, and along the edges of the glass next to the trim. Paint smears will wipe off with a cloth.

Maxwell House Coffee. To prevent paint from dripping when painting the ceiling, carefully cut an X through the center of the plastic lid from a can of Maxwell House Coffee. Insert the handle of the paintbrush through the X in the lid, allowing the coffee lid to catch any paint drips.

Post-it Notes. To avoid splattered paint on windows, metal work, and floors, before painting a room, place Post-it Notes along the edge of the glass, over door hinges, and along a vinyl or tile floor where it meets the wall.

Reynolds Wrap. To prevent paint splatters on hardware, mold a sheet of Reynolds Wrap around doorknobs, electrical switches, faucets, and handles before painting.

Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge. To remove latex paint from electrical outlet covers, remove the outlet covers from the wall, soak in a sink filled with water for one hour, and then scrub lightly with a Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scrub Sponge.

Stayfree Maxi Pads. When painting, use Stayfree Maxi Pads to help absorb any drips on the walls. When painting in a tight corner, peel off the adhesive strip and stick the maxipad to the floor so it catches all the paint. You can use a pair of scissors to cut the maxipad to any shape you need.

Vaseline Petroleum Jelly and Q-Tips Cotton Swabs. Before painting a room, dip a Q-Tips Cotton Swab in Vaseline Petroleum Jelly and run it around the edges of the glass; coat door hinges, doorknobs, lock latches; and spread a thin coat of Vase- line Petroleum Jelly along a vinyl or tile floor where it meets the wall. Paint smears will wipe off easily with a cloth.

Ziploc Storage Bags. To avoid paint splatters on a doorknob, cover the doorknob with a Ziploc Storage Bag.
