Pests > Raccoons and. Squirrels

Castor Oil. To keep squirrels out of your attic, mix one-half cup castor oil and two gallons water, fill a trigger-spray bottle with the solution, and spray it around your attic. Castor oil repels rodents. You can also keep squirrels out of your garden by watering the plants with this castor oil solution, which also enriches the soil.

Crisco Mi-Vegetable Shortening. To prevent squirrels from climbing into a bird feeder, grease the pole to the birdhouse with Crisco All-Vegetable Shortening.

Epsom Salt. To repel raccoons, sprinkle a few tablespoons of Epsom Salt around your garden and garbage cans. Raccoons dislike the taste of salt.

Jif Peanut Butter. Bait a humane box trap, available from your local animal control center, with Jif Peanut Butter to attract squirrels or raccoons. The animal control center will tell you where to release the animals.

McCormick Black Pepper. McCormick Black Pepper does an excellent job of getting rid of unwanted raccoons, squirrels. dogs, or cats—without harming the animals. Simply sprinkle the area around your garbage cans [ around flower beds or vegetable gardens as well) with black pepper. These creatures all share a highly sensitive sense of smell, and the pepper will keep them far away. The neighbors may think you’re crazy when they see you sprinkling pepper on your lawn, but at least you’ll be rid of those pests. Want proof this trick works: Whenever you go to a fancy restaurant and the waiter comes over to put pepper on your salad, you’ll notice there are no raccoons around.

McCormick Ground (Cayenne) Red Pepper. To keep squirrels out of a bird feeder, sprinkle McCormick Ground (Cayenne) Red Pepper over the birdseed. Birds cannot taste red pepper, but squirrels can and stay far away from it.

McCormick Pure Peppermint Extract, Johnson & Johnson Cotton Balls, and L’eggs Sheer Energy Panty Hose. To keep squirrels and raccoons at bay, cut the foot off a pair of clean, used L’eggs Sheer Energy Panty Hose, saturate a few Johnson & Johnson Cotton Balls with McCormick Pure Peppermint Extract, and place the cotton balls inside the panty hose foot. Hang the sachet from a fence post, tree branch, or rafter in the attic. The smell of mint repels squirrels and raccoons.

Old Spice Aftershave Lotion. To repel squirrels from your chimney or attic, spray the area with Old Spice Aftershave Lotion. The brisk fragrance repels squirrels.

Pam Cooking Spray. To keep squirrels out of a bird feeder, coat the pole with Pam Cooking Spray so squirrels attempting to climb up slide right back down.

Quaker Oats. Bait a humane box trap, available from your local animal control center, with uncooked Quaker Oats to attract squirrels or raccoons. The animal control center will tell you where to release the animals.

Slinky. To prevent squirrels from climbing up the pole to a bird feeder, secure a Slinky to the bottom of the bird feeder and let it hang down the pole. Any squirrel that tries to climb up the pole will be frightened away by the recoiling springs.

Tabasco Pepper Sauce, McCormick Chili Powder, and Ivory Dishwashing Liquid. To repel squirrels, mix three teaspoons Tabasco Pepper Sauce, one teaspoon McCormick Chili Powder, one-half teaspoon Ivory Dishwashing Liquid, and two cups water in a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle. Spray the solution around your yard or attic.

Tidy Cats. Repel squirrels from flower beds by sprinkling a tablespoon of used Tidy Cats cat box filler on the ground. (Do not use the cat box filler in vegetable or herb gardens.] Squirrels catch one whiff of the scent of their natural enemy and flee.

Vaseline Petroleum Jelly. To prevent squirrels from being able to climb up the pole to a bird feeder, coat the pole with Vase- line Petroleum Jelly. Even the most ambitious squirrels slip right back down.

Ziploc Freezer Bags. To keep raccoons away from your garbage cans or garden, place a portable radio inside a gallon-size Ziploc Freezer Bag, turn the radio on, and seal the bag shut. The noise from a radio, particularly one tuned to a heavy metal station or all-night talk show, repels raccoons.
