Refinishing wood trim (Page 2)

Elaborate wood trim, especially in older houses, is a real asset because it looks great and performs the critical function of blending rooms together into a cohesive interior design. Unfortunately, itís difficult and ex pensive to replace, so most people refinish it instead. This usually involves removing old paint to expose the wood underneath, and then, applying a new finish. This job requires more elbow grease than carpentry skills. In fact, perseverance is probably the most important trait that you can bring to the job.

Step 4. Once the paint is removed, sand the trim with 120-grit sandpaper. Remove the paper from the block, and fold it in half to sand deep crevices. You can also use a random-orbit power sander on flat surfaces.

Step 5. Remove all the sanding dust from the trim; then brush on a shellac-based sanding sealer. Once this is dry, lightly sand it smooth; remove the dust; and apply at least two coats of polyurethane finish.

smart tip

PAINT SCRAPERS ARE GREAT TOOLS FOR REMOVING PAINT, BUT THEY CAN BE TIRING TO USE IF YOU ARE STRIPPING A LOT OF PAINT. MAKE THE JOB EASIER BY KEEPING THE SCRAPER BLADE SHARP. EITHER REPLACE IT FREQUENTLY, OR SHARPEN IT WITH A FILE AS SOON As YOU FEEL IT STARTING TO DULL.
