(Removing Old Vinyl Flooring) (Ceramic Tile) (Old Water Heater)

Removing Old Vinyl Flooring

Step 1. Remove baseboard and trim using a pry bar and scrap wood. Use locking pliers to pull out the nails from the back.

Step 2. Cut the vinyl into strips that are 12 to 16 in. wide. Use a linoleum knife or a utility knife, and make sure to cut all the way through the flooring.

Step 3. Use a flat pry bar or a wide putty knife to remove the flooring. Work one tip of the tool under a cut line and lift a corner.

Removing Ceramic Tile

Remove ceramic tile with a cold chisel, prying tiles off one by one (left). Since the drywall underneath may have to be replaced, cut away chunks with a reciprocating saw and remove the chunks whole (right). Always wear eye protection: flying pieces of tile can be dangerous.

Removing an old Water Heater

Step 1. Drain the old tank by shutting off the water supply and draining the tank with a garden hose.

Step 3. Gas heaters vent through a flue hat at the top of the heater. Remove it, and cut the water lines above the union (inset).

Step 2. Shut off the gas and undo the union fitting below the shutoff valve.

Step 4. Pull the heater toward you and pivot it out into the room.
