McCormick Food Coloring. To determine whether a toilet tank is leaking, put enough food coloring in the toilet tank to change the color of the water. Let the colored water sit over night without flushing the toilet. If the water in the bowl has changed color in the morning, your tank is leaking into the bowl and wasting water. Stop the leak by adjusting the lift chain or replacing the flapper.

Mrs. Stewart’s Liquid Bluing. To detect a leak in a toilet tank, put a few drops of Mrs. Stewart’s Liquid Bluing into the toilet’s holding tank to determine whether the tank leaks into the bowl, wasting water. Stop the leak by adjusting the lift chain or replacing the flapper.
